Join Us at the International Mine Water Association (IMWA) Congress!
We’re excited to share that Aquanty will be taking part in the International Mine Water Association Congress (IMWA Congress), one of the world's leading events dedicated to mine water research, management, and innovation.
DATE: July 5-10, 2026
LOCATION: High1 Resort, Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, South Korea
Hosted by Sangji University, Korea Mine Rehabilitation and Mineral Resources Corporation (KOMIR), Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), and the Korean Society of Mineral and Energy Resources Engineers (KSMER), this event marks only the second time in IMWA’s 40-year history that the congress has been held in Asia.
The congress will bring together mine water professionals, researchers, students, and industry leaders from around the world to exchange knowledge, discuss emerging challenges, and explore innovative solutions for mine water management.
Conference highlights include:
In-depth technical sessions and discussions
Technical field trips to Korea’s major mining regions
Opportunities to engage with leading mine water experts from around the world
Networking and collaboration opportunities across academia, government, and industry
Field experiences showcasing Korea’s unique mining heritage and culture
At this year's congress, Dr. Hyoun-Tae Hwang, Director of HydroGeoSphere at Aquanty, will present:
Integrated Modeling Innovations for Mining and Underground Infrastructure: Dynamic Mesh Adaptation and Tunnel Boundary Conditions for Coupled Surface–Groundwater Systems
Co-authored by Young-Jin Park, Steven Berg, Jon Jones, Killian Miller and Edward Sudicky, this research introduces two major advancements within HydroGeoSphere designed to improve simulation of mining and underground engineering systems. The study presents a dynamic meshing framework that enables continuous simulation of evolving landscapes during excavation, reclamation, and material placement without requiring model reinitialization. It also introduces an improved tunnel boundary condition that provides more accurate estimates of groundwater inflow to underground openings, even when using coarse regional model discretizations.
The integrated modelling framework was tested using synthetic mining applications and demonstrated improved representation of transient groundwater responses, reduced discretization-related inflow errors, and enhanced simulation of groundwater–surface water interactions. These developments support more reliable mine water management, infrastructure design, and environmental protection in mining environments.
